CARCHECKHQ BUYING ADVICE

Buying a car on Facebook Marketplace: a 5-step check

Simple checks before you travel or pay a seller you found online.

1. Check the registration matches the make, model and colour. A mismatch can be a sign of cloned plates.

2. Run a history check for finance, theft and write-offs before you travel.

3. Look at the MOT history for mileage jumps or repeated advisories.

4. See the V5C logbook at the seller's address and check the name and address match.

5. Be cautious about pressure to send a deposit before viewing. Verify the seller and payment arrangements, keep a written receipt, and remember that possessing keys or a V5C is not proof of legal ownership.

Use this guidance alongside the report coverage and limitations. See the sample vehicle report and report prices before choosing a check.
